Some couples meet at work.
Some meet through friends.
Some swipe right.
And some meet because they both happen to love drag racing.
Which, frankly, gives us a much better story. 😂
When we started planning this engagement session in Waukesha, I knew I didn’t want their photos to feel like some generic engagement session that could belong to anybody.
Because these two aren’t generic.
Their relationship started with a shared love of drag racing, their life includes two very important four-legged family members, and spending time with them means there is absolutely no shortage of laughter.
So instead of trying to turn them into something they’re not, we photographed their engagement session somewhere that actually felt like them:
At a house in Waukesha, with their pups, their personalities, and a whole lot of funny moments.
And THAT is exactly how engagement photos should feel.
Engagement Photos Should Actually Look Like You
Here’s something I tell couples all the time:
You do not need to choose an engagement-session location simply because it’s “pretty.”
Pretty is great.
But personal beats pretty every time.
Your engagement photos aren’t supposed to look exactly like the other 47 engagement sessions you saved on Pinterest.
They should tell me something about you.
Maybe that’s hiking somewhere gorgeous.
Maybe it’s wandering around downtown Milwaukee.
Maybe it’s drinking cocktails at the bar where you had your first date.
Maybe it’s hanging out at home with your dogs.
And maybe it’s incorporating the world that brought you together in the first place.
For these two?
That world is drag racing.
A Love Story That Started With Drag Racing
I LOVE when couples have something that’s unmistakably theirs.
And drag racing is definitely theirs.
They met through the racing world, which means it isn’t just some random hobby we threw into their engagement photos because we needed a prop.
It’s part of their story.
That’s what makes personal details so much better than manufactured ones.
The things you already love doing together usually give us far more interesting photographs than anything I could invent.
And they give you photographs that will actually mean something years from now.
If you’re planning your own engagement session, think about:
Where did you meet?
What do you do together?
What makes your relationship different?
Where do you spend your time?
What would make your friends look at the photos and immediately say, “Yep. That’s them.”?
That’s where the good stuff is.
An At-Home Engagement Session in Waukesha
There is something incredibly underrated about having engagement photos taken at home—or somewhere that feels like home.
Nobody is watching you.
You aren’t worried about crowds.
You don’t have to perform for strangers walking past.
And you’re already somewhere comfortable.
That creates space for the goofy stuff to happen naturally.
And with these two?
There was plenty of goofy stuff.
😂
That’s exactly what I want.
I don’t need you standing perfectly still, staring lovingly into each other’s eyes for 90 minutes.
Actually, please don’t.
That sounds exhausting for all of us.
I want movement.
Conversation.
Laughing.
Messing with each other.
Those little expressions you make when your partner says something ridiculous.
The moments where you temporarily forget I’m even photographing you.
That’s when your engagement photos stop looking like engagement photos and start looking like you.
YES, Bring Your Dogs to Your Engagement Session
Now let’s discuss the real stars of this operation:
The pups.
There were two dogs involved in this engagement session, which automatically increases both the cuteness level and the potential for chaos.
And I’m here for both.
If your dogs are part of your family, I absolutely think they belong in some of your engagement photos.
Will they look directly at the camera when we’d like them to?
Maybe.
Will one decide that THIS EXACT MOMENT is when they need to sniff something 30 feet away?
Almost certainly.
😂
That’s okay.
Perfection isn’t the goal.
I want photographs of you interacting with them.
Laughing when they don’t cooperate.
Snuggling them.
Playing with them.
Being the weird dog parents you already are when nobody is watching.
Those photographs often end up being favorites because they’re real.
Tips for Engagement Photos With Dogs
If you’re considering bringing your own pup to your engagement session, here are a few things that can make everything easier.
Bring Treats
We are not above bribery.
Not even a little bit.
Exercise Them Before the Session
A dog who has had a chance to burn off some energy may be slightly more interested in our photography agenda.
Slightly.
No promises. 😂
Don’t Expect Perfection
Your dog does not know this is an important photography event.
Your dog knows there are smells.
We work with it.
Bring Someone Who Can Help
If we’re photographing somewhere away from home, having another person who can take the dogs after their portion of the session can be incredibly helpful.
That way we can get your adorable family photos and then continue photographing the two of you without somebody holding two leashes just outside every frame.
Let Them Be Themselves
This is the big one.
If your dog is ridiculous…
Excellent.
I want ridiculous.
The goal isn’t to make your dog behave like a professional canine model.
The goal is to document your actual life together.
You Don’t Have to Know How to Pose
One of the biggest things couples tell me before engagement sessions is:
“We’re awkward in photos.”
Welcome to approximately 97% of humanity.
😂
You are not supposed to know how to pose.
That’s my job.
But my approach also isn’t:
“Put your hand exactly here. Tilt your head 13 degrees. Now stare romantically at each other.”
No thank you.
I’ll give you direction when you need it.
I’ll put you in good light.
I’ll help you figure out where to stand.
And then I’m going to get you interacting with each other.
Because the second you start laughing for real?
That’s usually when the photo gets good.
If the idea of being photographed makes you nervous, you’ll probably relate to my guide for couples who hate posing.
You don’t need modeling experience.
You need someone behind the camera who knows how to make the experience feel normal.
Your Engagement Session Doesn’t Need to Be Serious
This session had so many funny moments.
And I wouldn’t want it any other way.
Engagement photos can absolutely be romantic.
But romantic doesn’t have to mean serious.
You can laugh.
Be weird.
Tease each other.
Include your dogs.
Include the things you love.
And create photographs that show the relationship you actually have instead of some Pinterest-approved version of it.
That’s a huge part of my photography style.
I want the beautiful photo.
Of course I do.
But I also want the photograph where one of you is laughing so hard your face looks ridiculous.
You’ll probably love that one more anyway.
How to Make Your Engagement Session More Personal
If you’re currently planning your engagement photos, stop asking:
“Where does everyone take engagement photos?”
Instead ask:
“What would make these photos feel like us?”
That could mean:
- Your home
- Your favorite neighborhood
- A favorite bar or restaurant
- Your dogs
- Your motorcycles
- Your boat
- A hobby you share
- Your favorite hiking trail
- The place you met
- The neighborhood where you live
- Your favorite date-night activity
- Something completely ridiculous that makes sense only to you
That’s where engagement sessions become fun.
And when you’re having fun?
The photos get better.
Do Engagement Photos Have to Match Your Wedding?
Nope.
Your engagement session doesn’t need to look like a miniature version of your wedding.
If you’re having an elegant downtown Milwaukee wedding but spend every weekend at the racetrack?
Your engagement session can absolutely show the racing side of your life.
If you’re getting married at a rustic Wisconsin venue but live downtown and love city life?
Let’s photograph that.
Your engagement session gives us an opportunity to document another part of your story.
Use it.
Why Engagement Sessions Matter Before Your Wedding
There’s another reason I love engagement sessions that has nothing to do with needing photos for save-the-dates.
You get to experience being photographed together before your wedding day.
You learn that I’m not going to make you stand frozen in one position for 20 minutes.
I learn how the two of you interact.
I figure out what makes you laugh.
You figure out that you don’t actually hate having your photo taken.
Then your wedding arrives and instead of thinking:
“Oh God. Now we have to take pictures.”
you’re thinking:
“Oh hey! We know how this works.”
That’s a huge win.
And the more comfortable you are with me, the easier it is for me to capture the candid moments I care about on your wedding day.

Waukesha Engagement Photography FAQs
Where should we take engagement photos in Waukesha?
Your engagement session doesn’t have to happen at a traditional photo location. Parks and downtown areas can be beautiful, but your home, neighborhood, property, or another personally meaningful location can make your photographs much more unique.
Can we take engagement photos at our house?
Absolutely. At-home engagement sessions can feel incredibly relaxed and personal. They’re especially great if your home, pets, property, or lifestyle is an important part of your story.
Can we bring our dogs to our engagement session?
YES. If your dogs are part of your family, bring them. Treats, exercise beforehand, and an extra person to help with them can make the session easier, especially if we’re photographing away from your home.
What should we wear for engagement photos?
Wear something that feels like you and that you can comfortably move around in. You don’t need to dress like completely different people simply because you’re having professional photos taken.
What if we’re awkward in front of the camera?
Most couples tell me they’re awkward before we start. You don’t need to know how to pose. I’ll give you direction while keeping you interacting, moving, and laughing so your photos feel natural.
Should we include our hobbies in engagement photos?
Absolutely—especially when the hobby is meaningful to your relationship. Personal details can make your engagement photos much more memorable than choosing a location or activity simply because it’s trendy.
Do engagement photos have to be romantic?
They can be romantic, funny, adventurous, quiet, ridiculous, or all of the above. The goal is to create photographs that actually reflect your relationship.
